Schumacher shines at historic Indy

The Formula 1 world championship returned to what is one of the most famous racing circuits in the world, after a 40-year absence.

The 2.5-mile oval has been the home of the world-renowned Indy 500 since 1909. Many of the motor racing's most famous names have triumphed in the event including Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Mario Andretti. More recently in 1995 Jacques Villeneuve became the only current grand prix driver to take victory in the race.

Michael Schumacher lead his way back to the top of the championship after a spectacular race at the famous Indy circuit.

He lead his Ferrari team mate Rubens Barrichello to a victorious 1 - 2, after an exciting race.

McLaren's David Coulthard took the laed at the start of the race. But his race was far from over. He rolled on the start grid and was made to take a 10 second stop-go-penalty, which ended his chances of winning the race.

This left Michael Schumacher leading, with tital rival Mika Hakkinen in persuite. But just as the championship leader looked as though he was catching the red Ferrari, the engine of his silver McLaren blew leaving the way for Barrichello and Jordan star Frentzen to battle out for second and third place.

Towards the end of the race it looked like Schumacher lost his concentration as his red Ferrari went over a curb and on to the grass. But he regoined the race track still in first place with a 12 second gap between himself and team mate Barrichello.

Barrichello won his earlier battle between himself Frentzen to come home second, with the Jordan star in thir place.

Now, with just two races left in the 2000 season, Schumacher has an 8 point lead over Hakkinen. If Schumacher wins the next race in Japan, he will be champion.

But if Hakkinen wins the final two races and Schumacher is in second in both, the Ferrari star will still become champion, as he has more race wins this season than Hakkinen.
